Gemstones
Our gemstones
For each stone: the mineral family, composition, colors, hardness and birthstone month. Tap a stone to see its details.
Precious stones
Diamond, ruby, sapphire and emerald: the four stones that tradition calls precious.
Colored gemstones
Transparent stones in every color, faceted or cut as cabochons. In everyday language they are among the so-called “semi-precious” stones.
Hardstones
Opaque or translucent stones, worked as cabochons, inlays and carvings: a long Florentine tradition. They too are often called “semi-precious”.
Organic gems
Born from living organisms: pearl and coral from the sea, amber from ancient trees.
Hardness on the Mohs scale
The Mohs scale indicates resistance to scratching, from 1 to 10.
For lapis lazuli, a rock made of several minerals, no single hardness value is given.
Birthstones
The stones associated with each month in the modern lists.
Colored gemstones and hardstones are often called “semi-precious”. International trade rules consider this term misleading and recommend not using it: the value of a gem depends on its qualities, not on its group, and some colored gemstones are worth more than many precious stones. Stone colors and drawings are indicative.
