Cleaning and storing with care
Well cared-for jewelry stays beautiful for generations. Almost all stones need little; some require a little extra attention.
Warm water, mild soap and a soft brush: it is the gentlest way and suits almost all gems.
They are risky for many stones. Those treated with oils, resins or waxes, common in emeralds and opals, should not go in an ultrasonic cleaner; steam can loosen stones in their setting.
Never ultrasonic or steam. After wearing them, wipe them with a soft cloth; for a deeper clean, now and then, warm water and soap.
They almost always have filled fractures: vibrations can weaken them and steam can force out the oil or resin. Only warm water, soap and a light touch.
The only safe way to clean it is warm water and soap. It is sensitive to heat and sudden changes in temperature.
Prongs and small pavé stones can loosen with wear: having them checked periodically by a jeweler avoids losing a stone.
